Pirate Challenge 8: Walk the plank...

Created by Emily @nzquirkymama
Home-Schooler, Canterbury, New Zealand.
Swashbuckling thanks rolling down the decks!

Challenge:
Can you build a plank that is cantilevered off the edge of a ship?
How many stones, nuts or counters can rest on your plank before it capsizes your ship?
Where will you put your Pirate Flag?
You have 20 minutes!

Supplies:
·      6x skewers, sticks or paddle-pop sticks (you may not need them all)
·      6x marshmellows, blobs of blue tak or play dough
     Newspaper
     Cardboard for your plank
     Wool or string
Nuts, counters or stones to test your plank

Definition of cantilever:
cantilever is a beam anchored at only one end. The beam carries the load to the support where it is forced against by a moment and shear stress.[1] Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing. Cantilevers can also be constructed with trusses or slabs.

(If you incorporate a lid for you treasure that would be swashbucking awesome!)

Remember to include your pirate flag on your treasure chest somewhere.

Afterwards you need to use a standard and a nonstandard unit to measure and compare the length of your treasure chest.
